The greatest inspiration for this painting are the works of dutch painter Hieronymus Bosch. Influences can be seen in the subject matter, composition and ‘mostly dark’ symbols. Although the symbols are loaded with perdition, danger and evil, they often come with a laugh. So, despite the dark side of the painting, there are a lot of laughable twists and a ray of hope from prosperity and resurrection.
Struggle in vain reflects our time and shows the two meanings of vanity: on the one hand something that’s vain, empty or valueless, and on the other hand excessive pride in one’s appearance or accomplishments; conceit.
